Markets, shops, and corporate offices within the Central Business District (CBD) of Kumasi and other parts of the metropolis will temporarily close on Friday and Saturday to allow for the nationwide clean-up exercise.

In a statement, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) directed business owners to suspend operations and participate in the exercise by closing their premises from 6:00 a.m. until the end of the scheduled clean-up period.

“On Friday, there will be a clean-up exercise for private and public institutions, including shops, offices and markets, at their operational areas and environs from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. All should remain closed until the end of the exercise,” the statement said.

The Assembly added that all trading and commercial activities within the CBD on Saturday would also remain suspended until the exercise is completed.

It identified key locations for Saturday’s exercise as Alabar, Boss FM to Otumfuo Roundabout, Asem Astroturf, Yalewa Zongo, and M/A Zion School–Asafo.

The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council has designated the two-day exercise for institutional and community clean-up activities.

On Friday, July 10, Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), educational institutions, health facilities, security establishments, and public and private institutions are expected to clean their premises and immediate surroundings.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has also been asked to ensure that Junior High School and Senior High School students across the region participate in the exercise.

On Saturday, July 11, residents are expected to take part in a community clean-up exercise involving desilting drains, clearing choked gutters, removing refuse, and cleaning public spaces, markets, and lorry parks.

Commercial drivers have also been directed to suspend operations until the exercise ends.

Security agencies, including the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Prisons Service, and the National Ambulance Service, are expected to participate.

The National Clean-Up Exercise is aimed at improving sanitation, preventing sanitation-related diseases, and reducing the risk of flooding.
