The Ga Traditional Council has directed that all shops, markets and commercial entities within Accra remain closed from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, to allow residents to fully participate in the National General Cleaning Days.

The directive was announced in a press release issued on Tuesday, July 7, and signed by the Registrar of the Ga Traditional Council, Evelyn Yawotse, on behalf of the Ga Mantse and President of the Council, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II.

According to the Council, the decision is aimed at supporting the national clean-up exercise declared by President John Dramani Mahama following the devastating floods that affected parts of the country on June 29.

The Council said it was acting in collaboration with the Greater Accra Regional Minister, the Regional Coordinating Council, the Accra Mayor and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to mobilise residents to restore the environment and protect the sanctity of the capital.

“In support of the National General Cleaning Days on Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, we act in collaboration with the Regional Minister’s Office, the Regional Coordinating Council, and the Accra Metropolitan Authority to heal our environment and protect the sanctity of our capital,” the statement said.

The Council noted that the temporary closure of businesses is mandatory, with exemptions granted only to emergency services, essential medical units and authorised sanitation personnel.

It urged all residents to observe the directive with discipline and actively participate in the exercise to improve sanitation and reduce the risk of future flooding.

“Let every citizen rise to this call with discipline. When we cease our trading to cleanse our land, we secure our future and uphold the dignity of our people. A clean Accra is the strength of the Ga State and the pride of our nation,” the statement added.

The two-day national clean-up exercise is being held under the theme, “Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana after the Floods,” as part of efforts to restore flood-affected communities and improve environmental sanitation.
