The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) will on Monday cut the sod for the construction of a breast care centre at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), in what the Assembly describes as its first major self-funded project.

The Metropolitan Chief Executive, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadu, disclosed this in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, as he outlined key development projects the Assembly is undertaking to improve healthcare, security, and public infrastructure.

He said the breast care centre was a major priority for the Assembly, with the sod-cutting ceremony marking the start of the project.

“Over the years, most projects have been government funded, but this will be one of KMA’s first major funded project,” he said.

The facility is expected to strengthen healthcare infrastructure at KATH, although further details on its design, cost, and completion timeline were not immediately available.

Mr Ofori Agyemang Boadu also revealed that construction of a paediatric centre is about 70 per cent complete, with the Assembly targeting completion by the end of the year.

He said solar-powered billboards had also been installed as part of efforts to improve the city’s infrastructure.

The Mayor further announced plans to demolish the existing building in front of the Kumasi Central Prison and replace it with a two-storey office complex to improve the facility’s operations.

As part of the project, about nine offices are expected to be relocated to make way for the new development.

In addition, the Assembly has approved the construction of a modern divisional police station at the Central Police Station in Adum.

The project is intended to strengthen police operations and improve security within Kumasi’s central business district.

The planned breast care centre, paediatric facility, prison office complex and police station form part of the KMA’s broader development agenda for the metropolis.
