The Minister for the Interior has lifted the ban on women riding motorbikes in the Bawku Municipality and its surrounding communities following recommendations from the National Security Council.
The decision, announced through an Executive Instrument, allows women to use motorbikes daily between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. as part of revised security measures in the area.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, the Ministry of the Interior said the directive took immediate effect based on advice from the National Security Council.
“The Minister for the Interior, on the advice of the National Security Council and by Executive Instrument, has lifted the ban on women riding motorbikes in the Bawku Municipality and its environs,” the statement said.
The ministry, however, clarified that the existing restriction on men riding motorbikes remains in force until further notice.
It explained that while women are now permitted to ride motorbikes during the stipulated hours, the ban on male riders remains part of ongoing efforts to maintain peace and security in the conflict-prone area.
The Ministry urged residents to comply fully with the directive and cooperate with the security agencies to ensure the continued maintenance of law and order in the municipality.
