The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has apologised for his long-held teaching that Christians who do not pay tithe would not make it to heaven.
Speaking to his congregation, the respected cleric acknowledged that the statement was not supported by the Bible, making him wrong to make the claim.
“I apologise for saying if you don’t pay tithe, you won’t make it to heaven. I’m sorry, I was wrong. It’s not in the Bible,” he said.
Clarifying his position, Pastor Adeboye explained that while giving remains an important biblical principle, the scriptures do not state that salvation depends on paying tithe.
Instead, he pointed to what the Bible teaches about entering God’s kingdom, quoting Hebrews 12:14.
“What the Bible says is, ‘Be at peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord,'” he stated.
The veteran preacher said the experience had reminded him that even spiritual leaders can make mistakes and must be willing to correct them.
His remarks have generated widespread discussion among Christians, particularly as debates over tithing and its place in the New Testament continue across different denominations.
