The Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Eric Adjei, has urged government appointees to discharge their duties with integrity, saying public officials who act lawfully have no reason to fear future changes in government.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Adjei dismissed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) “the future is pregnant” slogan, insisting it does not intimidate members of the current administration.
“The NPP’s ‘the future is pregnant’ mantra does not scare us because we are doing the right things. The NPP should know that if the future is pregnant, then there will be a miscarriage before they return to power,” he said.
Mr. Adjei disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama has consistently cautioned his appointees against engaging in any conduct that could expose them to future accountability.
“President Mahama has warned us not to do anything wrong,” he stated.
Commenting on the prosecution of former government officials, the NEIP CEO said Ghana’s courts determine cases based on evidence and not political considerations.
He also expressed confidence in the Attorney General, saying he does not believe the country’s chief legal adviser is motivated by personal vendettas.
“The court works with evidence. If you get to court, regardless of any procedure, if you don’t have enough evidence to back your claim, it doesn’t hold value.
“I know the Attorney General doesn’t have a vindictive character, so once he makes a move then it’s right. And he is working,” he remarked.
According to Mr. Adjei, the ongoing investigations and prosecutions of former public officials should serve as a reminder to current office holders that they, too, will be held accountable for their actions after leaving office.
“So whoever is being charged today for wrongdoing in office should know that it will be your turn to account someday. So do your work diligently. Do the right thing regardless of any criticism. It’s your name that is on the appointment, so when trouble comes, you are going to face it,” he cautioned.
Mr. Adjei argued that the NPP’s suggestion that political fortunes would eventually change should not be viewed as a threat by government officials committed to acting lawfully.
“The NPP saying the future is pregnant and the tables will turn is what I don’t even want to hear. What have they done in this country?” he questioned.
“I’m not a hypocrite. NPP people are not our enemies; they are our brothers and sisters. But if you do the right thing and the future is pregnant, you care not. So who are they trying to scare? From where I sit, I will do the right thing and my colleagues should also. As an appointee, you should know power is transient, so be careful how you use it,” he added.
