The Chairman of the Greater Accra chapter of the Ghana Union Traders Association (GUTA) has said that he nearly slapped an immigration officer at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

David Kwadwo Amoateng who was speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii on Thursday said he nearly undertook the action upon seeing an immigration officer pushing the luggage of a young Chinese national.

“You can’t believe it but the immigration officer who was supposed to check the passports was pushing the luggage of a Chinese in the 30s all because of money…,” he said.

The businessman who was commenting on the attitude of Ghanaian immigration men said he was taking by surprise upon seeing the man in uniform performing such a menial task.

“As those who travel outside whether in other countries you will even see the teeth of an immigration officer let alone go to the extent of carrying your luggage…?,” he quizzed.

To him, the opposite of what happens to them when they travel abroad happens and this, he said should be attributed to the desire to get tips from travelers.

“In Ghana here, the Immigration officers are always laughing because of the money that they want from travelers…they even go to the extent of asking your destination when those details are already written in the passport and ticket, they just want to associate with you so they can demand money…,” he said.

The GUTA Chairman therefore called on the Immigration officers to learn to be professional in their duties if they want to be respected by the traveling public.

  1. This unprofessionalsm of our immigration officers is becoming unbearable, they beg for tips as if they don’t get pay every month. It is a shame to them and to Ghana as a whole. Someone has to put them on check.
