The Food and Drugs Authority has seized 140 boxes of prohibited alcoholic beverages in the Upper East Region, as the regulatory body steps up its crackdown on unsafe products in the market.

The haul included two banned brands — Bel Ice Vodka Energy Drink and Cody’s Vody Energy Mix — both of which were pulled from shelves due to the dangers posed by their stimulant content.

This was announced in a Facebook post by the FDA on Friday, May 15.

The authority warns that mixing alcohol with stimulants is a hidden health hazard, as stimulants can trick the body into feeling more sober than it actually is.

This causes drinkers to consume far more than they should. The consequences range from alcohol poisoning and reckless behaviour to potentially life-threatening health complications.

FDA is therefore urging the public to steer clear of these products entirely and has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on the sale of unapproved beverages nationwide.

The seizure is the latest in a series of nationwide enforcement operations the FDA has been conducting to flush out dangerous and unauthorised products from the Ghanaian market.
