File photo: Wedding reception

A Texas woman is going viral after showing up to her sister’s wedding in a somewhat untraditional maid of honour outfit.

The wild moment started sometime last year, when Christina Meador’s sister, Deanna Adams, started planning her wedding. Adams, 40, asked Meador to be her maid of honour, adding that each of her bridesmaids could choose whatever outfit they wanted.

Meador seemingly seized on that offer. In a post shared last month on her Facebook page, the 38-year-old revealed that she attended the wedding dressed as a dinosaur.

“When you’re a maid of honour and told you can wear anything you choose…I regret nothing,” Meador said in her post, along with a photo of her standing next to the couple in a full-bodied T. rex suit.

The post has since gone viral, earning more than 35,000 shares and 18,000 comments. Meador told the Daily Mail it was somewhat strange to see her outfit get so much attention, especially since she thought her sister wouldn’t be too shocked by the stunt.

“She, knowing that I’m not a big fan of wearing formal dresses and that I probably wouldn’t have a lot of money to buy something really nice, reassured me by letting me know that I could pick out any outfit that I choose,” Meador told the Daily Mail.

Apparently, Meador texted her sister about the idea as a joke, then decided to follow through when Adams said she would be OK with it. However, she waited until the last minute to tell her family she was actually planning to follow through.

“I arrived in Nebraska for the wedding, my sister picks me and my mom up from our hotel to go to a final dress fitting, and I bring it up on the ride that I had bought it and plan to wear it, and she laughed,” Meador said.

Meador said Adams did try to discourage her a little, buying her a $20 dress right before the ceremony, but she didn’t back down.

“I had decided that she would appreciate the dinosaur costume and it would be fun to mess with her about wearing it during the ceremony,” Meador told the Daily Mail.

A few people knew about the plan, but most of the guests were totally surprised, Meador said.

“It was hot!’ she recalled. “I remember being surprised that everyone seemed to be doing their best to avoid noticing the elephant in the room (or should I say dino), but it was hard to see in the costume,” she said.

The photo earned plenty of praise on Facebook, but there were also some who left negative comments saying they found Meador’s behaviour disrespectful. Adams seemed to disagree, though, stepping in to defend her sister against one commenter.

“[The costume] is not a joke, it’s a giant middle finger at spending thousands of dollars and putting ungodly amounts of pressure on ourselves just to please a bunch of people who, in the end, only want free food and drinks,” Deanna said on Facebook.
