Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia, Baba Jamal says President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo could soon be auctioned by some members of his government.
The former deputy Local Government Minister told Adom TV’s “Badwam” programme Tuesday, some government appointees are taking advantage of their closeness to the presidency to extort money from unsuspecting members of the public and corporate bodies.
“It will soon get to a point where Nana Addo will soon be placed in a glass and would be paraded just to beg for money from innocent people because we have realized that is the plan of the NPP. Nana Addo will now be used for a road show. It’s unfortunate and does not speak well for our democracy” he said.
His comments is in reaction  to media reports some  business owners were  asked to pay $100,000  before being allowed to sit closer to president at the Ghana Expatriate Business Awards (GEBA).
The NDC MP for Asawase in the Ashanti region Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak was first to raise the issue in Parliament.
But the Trade Minister, Allan Kwadawo Kyerematen has been ordered by the Presidency to explain the ministry’s involvement despite an earlier disclaimer issue by the ministry to distant itself from the allegations.
The ministry explained, “The GEBA was the brainchild of the Millennium Excellence Foundation, an entity noted for its prowess and credibility in the organisation of world class events such as the Millennium Excellence Awards and the Accra Marathon.
But the former deputy Minister for Employment and Labour Relations believes there are elements in government whose prime objective is to milk unsuspecting members of the public.
According to him, his position would have been different if this particular fundraising concept was carefully done to raise funds for a worthy humanitarian cause.
