Former National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress, Joshua Hamidu Akamba, has expressed concern about what he describes as growing dishonesty, insults, and declining values in Ghana’s political space.
Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Mr Akamba said politics has become increasingly “dirty,” a situation he believes is discouraging some long-standing political actors.
“Something is happening in our political setup that is making some of us who came into it earlier feel uncomfortable. Our politics is very dirty, too much dishonesty,” he said.
He added that the current political environment is causing some people to regret their involvement in politics.
“The dishonesty is too much. Some of us even regret it,” he stated, adding that the issue cuts across all political parties, including the NDC, NPP, and CPP.
Mr Akamba also expressed concern about the conduct of some young people in politics, particularly on social media.
“The youth and the training they are getting now, when you go on social media, the insults and disrespect for adults is just too much and very bad,” he said.
He further recalled a past political experience involving late former Presidents Jerry John Rawlings and late John Evans Atta Mills, as well as party elders.
“I remember one day we went to a meeting. Kwabena Agyei is no more, but Asiedu Nketia is around, and the Council of Elders were there. Something happened, and at that time Rawlings and Professor Mills were there,” he recounted.
According to him, he boldly made his point at the meeting, after which former President Rawlings acknowledged him.
“After I spoke, Rawlings left. When he got to me, he said, ‘That’s my boy, remain strong. I know you will always be strong.’ Hajia Sanabu is my witness,” he said.
Mr Akamba added that many people still misunderstand his character and political stance.
“People don’t really know me yet,” he concluded.
