National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has called for heightened vigilance and active resistance in the fight to protect the environment.

According to him, communities must recognise the value of their natural resources and boldly resist any political or foreign influence that could lead to environmental destruction.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia made the call while addressing hundreds of members of the United Cadres’ Front (UCF) and party faithful at a ceremony in Kumasi.

He described community members as the frontline custodians of the environment and urged them to challenge any authority or individuals whose actions threaten forests, lands, and water bodies.

“They must be prepared to openly resist and reject any form of influence that undermines environmental sustainability through physical, mental, and social opposition,” he stated.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia identified blind loyalty, apathy, selfishness, and collaboration in illegal activities such as mining, fishing, sand winning, logging, and chain sawing as major drivers of environmental degradation.

He, therefore, tasked Unit Committees to take the lead in enforcing bye-laws against environmental destruction, drawing lessons from the former People’s Defence Committees (PDCs), which played key roles in maintaining discipline and enforcing laws at the grassroots.

He stressed the importance of collective action in preserving the environment for future generations.

The event, held on the theme “Ensuring Transparent Governance: The Role of Cadres,” was aimed at reflecting on the principles and activities of the UCF while charting a path forward.

Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, General Secretary of the NDC, also highlighted the need to expand cadre membership by bringing in more young people and instilling in them the movement’s core values.

He noted that people nurtured through cadre principles were less likely to engage in corrupt practices because of their foundation in selflessness and sacrifice.

Mr. Kwetey reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening and expanding the cadre base to support the party and future NDC administrations.

Also speaking at the event, Frank Amoakohene commended the UCF for its dedication and contribution to the party’s victory in the 2024 general elections.

He said the group played a vital role in campaigning under difficult conditions and helped mobilise wider support before and during the elections.
