A VIP bus travelling from Kumasi to Sunyani has been completely destroyed by fire at Abuakwa in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
According to reports, the bus began emitting smoke shortly after setting off from the Kumasi station.
When it reached the Abuakwa stretch of the main Kumasi-Sunyani road, the situation worsened, forcing passengers on board to quickly disembark.
An eyewitness, Ofori Boateng, told the exact cause of the fire had not yet been established, although there were suspicions that the vehicle’s engine may have overheated.
“When the vehicle started smoking, within less than five minutes, the whole bus was engulfed in flames,” he said.
He added that passengers were able to evacuate the bus in time, and no casualties were recorded. However, the vehicle and property inside it were destroyed by the fire.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality arrived at the scene and worked to bring the fire under control, but the bus had already been extensively damaged.
The incident caused heavy traffic on the Abuakwa stretch of the road, with police officers deployed to the area to manage the situation and ease congestion.
