Nana Yaw Akwada, a security expert, is finding it difficult to believe the government’s claim that it has neutralised an elaborate plot targeted at the Presidency with the ultimate aim of destabilising the country.
Government has been asked to bring further and better particulars following the arrest of three people allegedly planning a coup. They were arrested by a joint security operation comprising personnel drawn from the Defence Intelligence, Criminal Investigations Department and Bureau of National Investigations on Friday, September 20.
A statement signed by Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said the security personnel retrieved several arms, explosive devices and ammunitions from locations in Accra and Bawaleshie.

He said available evidence showed the intent was to build a support base of youth and radicalise them against the political authority in Ghana.
But, speaking on Adom FM‘s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Tuesday, Mr Akwada, who is the Executive Director of Bureau of Public Safety, described the statement as “laughable.”
He explained that, there are about 1.3 million illegal arms scattered across the country which pose greater threat, therefore, what the government discovered does not point to a coup.

“This claim is laughable because there are about 1.3 million arms in the country. It is difficult to accept this coup plot as credible,” Mr Akwada said.
He is convinced the announcement by the government will negatively affect the economy since no investor would be attracted to an unstable country.
Mr Akwada urged the government to disclose all the information about the security operation since “the more the people know the better.”
