A retired diplomat, Dr. KB Asante has disclosed that Ghana’s first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was not happy about the detention of Dr. JB Danquah.

“Kwame Nkrumah was not happy JB was in prison under the under the Preventive Detention Act (PDA) but he couldn’t do anything about it because he was also afraid of what JB Danquah will do when he is released” he said on Asempa FM’s Ekosi Sen Friday.

Dr. KB Asante made this remark to celebrate the 51st anniversary of the overthrow of Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah.

Dr. JB Danquah died at Nsawam Prison on 4th February.

Dr. Joseph Boakye Danquah was arrested and detained by his former good friend- Dr. Kwame Nkrumah who was then the president of Ghana under his Preventive Detention Act (PDA).

JB Danquah died after 13 months of being kept in prison—but before that and on his 4th month in prison, he wrote a letter to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah begging for a release.

But Dr. KB Asante indicated that, Kwame Nkrumah felt guilty because he did not treat JB Danquah fairly after bowing to pressure from within his political party.

“I personally spoke to him [Kwame Nkrumah] about that prison incident and he told me [he feels guilty especially when  JB Danquah died in detention” he noted.

This notwithstanding, KB Asante maintained that the selflessness of the late Osagyefo must be emulated by all.
