Grêmio FBPA have prevented Francis Amuzu from joining Ghana’s national team camp ahead of the Black Stars’ upcoming international friendly against Mexico national football team later this month.

According to Brazilian outlet GZH, the club was informed that the winger was expected to report to the Black Stars camp on Thursday, May 14.

However, Grêmio declined to release him, citing the timing of the call-up and their congested fixture schedule, which includes a Copa Sudamericana clash against Club Deportivo Palestino and a league fixture against Santos FC on May 23.

Amuzu has been in impressive form for the Brazilian club, scoring seven goals this season to rank as the team’s second-highest scorer behind Carlos Vinícius, who has 14 goals.

The setback comes at a crucial moment for the 26-year-old, who had earned his first senior Ghana call-up under new head coach Carlos Queiroz.

Born in Ghana but raised in Belgium, Amuzu previously represented Belgium national under-21 football team at youth level and turned down a Ghana call-up in 2022, citing his hopes of representing the European nation at senior level.

However, he recently switched allegiance to Ghana and was expected to begin his international journey with the Ghana national football team before Grêmio’s decision put those plans on hold.

The friendly against Mexico forms part of Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
