Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to focus on rebuilding the Black Stars through a long-term development plan rather than placing immediate emphasis on winning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Kingston’s comments follow Ghana’s elimination from the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia in their Round of 32 clash.
Jhon Arias scored the decisive goal in the first half to end the Black Stars’ campaign.
Speaking on Joy Prime, the former Hearts of Oak and Great Olympics winger argued that Ghana must adopt a more strategic approach to restore the national team to its former glory.
According to Kingston, the current squad lacks the depth and quality required to compete for continental success, and the focus should instead be on building a strong foundation for the future.
“We shouldn’t be thinking about winning the AFCON because we do not have a team,” Kingston said.
The Black Stars’ run at the 2026 World Cup marked their first appearance in the knockout stage since the 2010 tournament in South Africa, but their journey ended in the Round of 32.
Ghana will now turn its attention to rebuilding efforts and preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with growing calls for a sustainable approach to player development and national team planning.
