The Ghana Education Service (GES) has released the approved 2026/2027 academic calendar for all basic schools across the country, outlining reopening and closing dates for the three academic terms as well as the schedule for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
In a circular dated May 6, 2026, and signed by the Deputy Director-General (Management Services), Prof. Smile Dzisi, on behalf of the Director-General, the Service directed all Regional Directors of Education to disseminate the calendar to heads of Kindergarten, Primary and Junior High Schools through the Metro, Municipal and District Directors of Education.
According to the calendar, the first term will begin on September 8, 2026, and end on December 17, 2026, after 15 weeks of academic work. Students will then proceed on vacation from December 18, 2026, to January 4, 2027.
A two-day mid-term break has been scheduled for November 5 and 6, 2026.
The second term will commence on January 5, 2027, and run for 12 weeks before ending on March 25, 2027. Vacation for the term will be observed from March 26 to April 19, 2027.
The third and final term will begin on April 20, 2027, and conclude on July 22, 2027, marking the end of the academic year. Students will proceed on their long vacation from July 23, 2027.
GES also announced that the 2027 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will be conducted from Wednesday, May 5, to Wednesday, May 12, 2027.
The Service reminded stakeholders that all public holidays falling within the academic year should be observed, while a two-day mid-term break will also be observed in each term for all basic schools.
GES further urged management at the regional, metro, municipal, district and school levels to take note of the approved dates and make adequate preparations to ensure a smooth and effective 2026/2027 academic year.
