The Ga North Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Akwetey Agbo, has explained that construction of a public toilet facility beneath the Pokuase Interchange was halted after concerns were raised about the location’s suitability.
According to him, the project was initially part of efforts to address congestion around the Pokuase enclave by relocating transport operators to designated spaces under the interchange.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr Agbo said the facility was intended to serve transport operators who would be moved from the busy bus stop area as part of measures to improve traffic flow and sanitation.
“I am aware of it, but we have stopped the project. We wanted to address a problem around the Pokuase enclave. There is a lot of congestion there, so we decided that in our bid to sanitise the community and ensure the free flow of traffic, we would decongest the area,” he explained.
He said the structures under the interchange were originally meant to accommodate transport operations, and the need for basic amenities such as washrooms informed the decision to construct the facility.
“Under the interchange, there are cubicles meant for transport operations within the area, so we decided to move the transport operators around the bus stop to the interchange. When they come there, there are critical things they will need, like a washroom. In an attempt to put up a washroom, that is why those structures were built,” he said.
However, the MCE acknowledged that the location was inappropriate and disclosed that the project had been abandoned for about six months.
“I realised citing it there is not conducive. It has been abandoned and it has been done on a different site. We didn’t agree that a toilet would be sited there,” he stated.
Mr Agbo clarified that the Ga North Municipal Assembly was not financing the project, stressing that the contractor would bear responsibility for the abandoned structure.
“The assembly is not spending a dime on the project. It is the wrong site, and that weighs on the contractor, so the assembly is not paying for anything,” he added.
The Ga North Municipal Assembly has also announced plans to demolish the partially constructed public toilet facility beneath the Pokuase Interchange following concerns over safety, sanitation and the appropriateness of the location.
