Bishop Dr. Richard Ayiku

A man of God was saved by his instincts from becoming a victim of the fatal accident which claimed the lives of some 34 people at Dompoase near Komenda Junction in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrim (KEEA) district.

Bishop Dr Richard Ayiku had gone to the station in Takoradi to board the vehicle to Accra but instinctively decided to go back home for no apparent reason.

“I almost boarded the VVIP bus in Takoradi but when I got there, I felt I don’t have to travel at that time and went back home,” he revealed on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday.

The accident, which involved two 60-seater passenger buses travelling in the opposite direction on the Accra-Takoradi highway Tuesday at the dawn of January 14, claimed 34 lives including three children and injured several others.

54 others sustained various varying degrees of injuries with reports suggesting that some 27 of the injured are still receiving treatment at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH).

Bishop Dr Ayiku, narrating his devine escape, said the accident could have been avoided if the driver of the VVIP bus had been a little careful.

The man of God revealed that he was also a victim of a similar accident which occurred on the same road 10 years ago.

“I was in the Nigeria-bound STC bus which collided with a tanker truck transporting diesel on the Dompoase road some 10 years ago but I survived by the grace of God,” he said.

Bishop Ayiku recounted that i the case of the accident that happened some one decade ago, the driver of the bus he was traveling in had given the driving duty to his conductor, popularly known as ‘mate’ in Ghana and went to sleep.

The inexperienced mate, he recalled, could hardly control the steering and as result, veered off his lane and crashed into the oncoming diesel tanker.

The pastor said about 30 people died on the spot, living several others injured or at worst, maimed.

“I was stuck between the seats for hours before getting rescued later. My eyes almost popped out but for the intervention of a Cuban doctor at Interbeton [Cape Coast Teaching hospital],” he recalled painfully.

According to him, many people who did not die on the spot, died later at the hospital.

He asked for something drastic to be done about that section of the road lest the nation records more accidents from there.
