Nearly two months after the devastating June 29 floods that affected several communities across seven region in the country, a four-month-old baby is still missing.
The Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, who disclosed this said the baby is the only person still officially reported missing following the disaster, which claimed 39 lives and affected 91,989 people from 18,398 households across 77 districts.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, August 24, the Interior Minister said recovery efforts had accounted for the victims of the floods, except the infant who remains unaccounted for.
“A total of 91,989 persons from 18,398 households were victims of the disaster. One person remained missing, a four-month-old baby, and 39 deaths,” he said.
The Greater Accra Region recorded the highest impact, with 56,022 people affected across 27 districts and 17 deaths.
The Central Region followed with 21,882 affected persons across 16 districts and eight deaths, while the Volta Region recorded 9,466 affected persons across seven districts, with four fatalities.
In the Ashanti Region, 1,461 people across 16 districts were affected. The Western North Region recorded 937 affected persons across six districts, with no deaths reported.
The Western Region also recorded about 2,000 affected persons across two districts, while one district in the Eastern Region was affected, although no specific figure was provided.
The figures highlight the devastating impact of the June 29 floods, which displaced households, disrupted communities and caused significant loss of life across the country.
However, the continued disappearance of the four-month-old baby means the tragedy remains painfully unresolved for the child’s family.
Mr Muntaka did not provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the baby’s disappearance or the latest efforts to locate the child.
