The Ghana National Fire Service has identified smoking remnants as another major cause of fire outbreaks at the Kasoa New Market.

Speaking on Badwam on Adom TV, a Public Safety Education Officer in charge of market patrols, Ernest Amoah, revealed that some fires occur after market hours due to the careless disposal of cigarette butts.

According to him, when the market closes in the evening, some individuals gather in the area to smoke and often leave behind lit cigarette remnants on the ground.

He explained that these remnants can easily ignite nearby materials, leading to fire outbreaks.

The officer further raised concerns about the lack of adequate security at the market, noting that there are no market wardens to monitor activities after closing hours.

He suggested that the situation could be improved with better security measures, including the presence of dedicated wardens.

He also recommended the establishment of a fire post within the market to operate on a 24-hour basis to enhance rapid response and improve safety.
