A fire outbreak at a substation operated by the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) at Mallam has disrupted electricity supply to parts of Accra, including Lapaz, Mallam and Awoshie.
The fire reportedly damaged control boards and transformers at the facility, potentially affecting the transmission of electricity to communities served by the installation.
Firefighters from the Adjen Kotoku and Amasaman fire stations were deployed to the scene to contain the blaze.
Their intervention helped prevent the fire from spreading to other critical equipment within the substation, limiting the risk of further damage to the facility.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established.
The full extent of the damage and the timeline for restoring normal operations remain unclear, pending technical assessments of the affected equipment.
GRIDCo operates Ghana’s national electricity transmission network, transporting power from generating plants to distribution companies for supply to homes, businesses and other consumers.
Substations are essential components of the transmission system, housing transformers, control boards and other equipment that regulate and manage the flow of electricity.
Damage to such installations can affect transmission operations and delay the restoration of power to affected communities.
