Black Satellites head coach Maxwell Konadu has insisted that pressure from supporters is a vital part of football, describing it as a key driver of improvement despite Ghana’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 WAFU U-20 Championship in Ivory Coast.
His remarks come in the wake of Ghana’s group-stage elimination from the regional tournament after the Black Satellites finished third in Group B with just two points from three matches, missing out on a place in the knockout stage.
Ghana’s campaign got off to a difficult start with a 4-2 defeat to Nigeria before the team played out a 1-1 draw against Burkina Faso.
A goalless draw with Togo in their final group fixture was not enough to keep their hopes alive.
Speaking to Citi Sports upon the team’s return to Ghana, Konadu acknowledged the intense scrutiny that accompanies coaching the national team but stressed that criticism from supporters should be embraced as part of the game’s development.
“Without pressure from fans, football won’t get to where it needs to be. The only thing is that some people take things too personally,” Konadu said.
The former Black Stars assistant coach noted that high expectations are inevitable in a football-loving nation such as Ghana, where supporters are deeply passionate about the success of the country’s national teams.
Despite the disappointing tournament, Konadu believes constructive criticism can help raise standards and push teams to perform better, rather than being viewed as a personal attack.
The Black Satellites will now shift their attention to preparations for the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, which Ghana is set to host as part of the country’s 70th Independence Anniversary celebrations.
