Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) Communications Director Charles Osei Asibey has expressed disappointment with the Black Bombers coach after their performance at the just-concluded 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
His remarks follow Ofori Asare’s revelations on inadequate logistical support that hampered the team’s preparations and participation at the event.
Team Ghana sent 10 boxers from the Black Bombers and Black Hitters to the Games, with five members reaching the quarter-finals.
African Games champion Amadu Mohammed was the lone boxer to progress past the quarter-finals into the semi-finals, ultimately capturing a bronze medal, Ghana’s second medal at the Games.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Asibey said coach Ofori Asare had assured Ghanaians that boxers would return home with medals, but the outcome fell short of those expectations.
“I don’t want to blame anyone, but Ofori Asare promised Ghana medals and failed to deliver,” he said.
According to him, the coach should take responsibility for the team’s performance at the Games rather than shifting blame.
However, Asibey suggested Ghana’s poor showing could have been the result of questionable officiating or technical shortcomings within the team.
“From my perspective, there are two things: either we were being robbed, or we were doing something technically wrong,” he added.
The GOC Communication director called for a thorough assessment of the team’s performance to determine the factors behind the disappointing results and identify areas for improvement.
Despite sending a strong 10-member boxing team, Ghana’s performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow fell below expectations, yielding just one medal.
The result marked a decline from the team’s showing at Birmingham 2022 and matched its medal haul from the 2018 Gold Coast Games.
