An aspirant for the position of National Nasara Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Awal Mohammed, has pledged to restructure the party’s Nasara Wing and strengthen its presence in Zongo communities across the country ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Mr Mohammed made the commitment after submitting his nomination on August 25, saying his background in the NPP’s communications team had equipped him with the experience needed to lead the newly rebranded wing.
He said his long-standing engagement with Zongo communities and his role in communicating the party’s policies made him well positioned to take charge of the organisation.
A key part of his agenda, he explained, would be to build a functional grassroots structure capable of identifying, organising and maintaining reliable records of Nasara members nationwide.
Mr Mohammed identified the lack of proper data on members, particularly students affiliated with the Nasara Wing on university campuses, as one of the challenges that needs urgent attention.
He said the campus wing was established to develop the intellectual base of the organisation, but the absence of an effective coordination system had made it difficult to keep track of members.
If elected, he said he would establish structures from the grassroots level and create systems that would improve membership tracking and organisational coordination.
Mr Mohammed also highlighted what he described as significant achievements of the NPP during its eight years in government, particularly in Zongo communities.
He cited the establishment of the Zongo Development Fund and the decision to make Arabic an examinable subject as some of the initiatives the party promised during the 2016 campaign and subsequently implemented.
However, he admitted that the NPP failed to adequately communicate these achievements to beneficiaries, a situation he believes contributed to the party’s difficulties in the 2024 election.
According to him, the NDC took advantage of that communication gap during the campaign, demonstrating the need for the NPP to improve how it engages Zongo communities.
Mr Mohammed said his experience in political communication would be an advantage in addressing the challenge.
He noted that he has regularly represented the NPP on international media platforms, particularly Hausa-language programmes on outlets including the BBC, Voice of America and Deutsche Welle.
He believes the experience has given him the communication skills required to effectively explain the NPP’s policies and distinguish the party’s message from that of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Mr Mohammed said the Nasara Wing needed a strong voice capable of taking the party’s message directly to Zongo communities and rebuilding confidence in the NPP.
He said his ultimate objective was to transform the wing into a well-organised and effective mobilisation structure capable of helping the NPP regain support in Zongo communities and contribute to victory in the 2028 elections.
He expressed confidence in his chances and said he was looking forward to the vetting process, after which he would begin engaging communities and working towards strengthening the party.
