Ghana Chamber of Mines has deepened efforts to ensure that mining companies in the country prioritise the safety of workers and residents in the communities they operate.
Speaking at Kenyasi in the Ahafo Region during the 2026 Zone III Inter – Mine Safety and First Aid Competition organised by Ghana Chamber of Mines for five (5) mining companies namely ; Newmont Ahafo South Mine, AngloGold Asante Obuasi Mine, Asanko Gold Ghana, Asnte Gold Chirano and Perseus Mining Ghana, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghana Chamber of Mines, Engineer Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey explained that in mining the safety of workers is not negotiable and no arms of gold worth more than a human life, therefore there is the need for mining companies to prioritize safety of workers.
According to him, the annual inter-mine safety and first aid competition allows mining companies to showcase their preparedness to address accidents and also to give confidence to workers, their families and the nation that any form of injury that happens can be handled.
The General Manager of Newmont Ahafo South Mine, Alex Annin also in his address mentioned that despite the effective measures put in place still incidents occur, meaning safety can’t be compromised.
He indicated that the introduction of the inter – mine safety and first aid competition by Ghana Chamber of Mines has let mining companies in the country put in more efforts to safeguard workers and also strengthen their first aid.
