Sahle-Work Zewde has been elected Ethiopia’s first female president by the country’s parliament after the resignation of Mulatu Teshome.

Teshome had on Wednesday tendered his letter of resignation since taking office in 2013.

Sahlework Zewde, a prominent Ethiopian diplomat with years of experience with the UN, has replaced Teshome as the first female president under the current government led by the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF).

Ambassador Sahle-work was appointed in June this year by Secretary-General António Guterres as his Special Representative to the African Union and Head of the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU) at the level of Under-Secretary-General, succeeding Haile Menkerios, another Ethiopian to hold the post.
