The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has closed down Dukes Fuel Station at Kasoa Second Bus Stop over serious sanitation breaches that contributed to flooding along the busy highway.

The action was taken after EPA officials discovered heavily choked drains in front of the fuel station, obstructing the free flow of water and causing flooding during rainfall.

The closure forms part of the ongoing nationwide clean-up exercise aimed at improving sanitation, clearing blocked drainage systems and reducing the risk of flooding in affected communities.

Speaking to Channel One News, the Kasoa Area Head of the EPA, Abbas Dawood, said the blocked drains had caused water to spill onto the main road, creating risks for motorists and pedestrians.

He noted that the fuel station was still operating despite the poor sanitary conditions around the facility. Following an inspection, the Assembly ordered its immediate closure until the drains are properly desilted and all sanitation concerns are addressed.

Mr Dawood warned that the EPA and the Assembly would not hesitate to shut down other businesses that fail to comply with sanitation regulations.

“We assessed the area and found that all the drains were choked, causing water to overflow. We want residents, shops and businesses to take responsibility for environmental sanitation to help reduce flooding in Kasoa.

“We will also close other businesses that fail to desilt the drains in front of their premises. This is necessary, and we will meet with the management to discuss the way forward,” he said.
