The Ministry of Education has condemned the shooting incident at Zohe Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Primary School in Yendi in the Northern Region, describing it as an unacceptable act that endangers the safety of pupils, teachers and the entire educational community.

In a statement issued on Thursday, July 9, the Ministry said two armed men reportedly entered the school premises and fired gunshots indiscriminately, triggering panic among pupils and staff.

Preliminary reports indicate that the assailants also assaulted the headmaster, leaving him injured. The motive behind the attack remains unknown, with investigations currently underway.

The Ministry disclosed that the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Police Service to launch an urgent and comprehensive investigation to identify and arrest those responsible.

It stressed that schools must remain safe and secure environments dedicated to teaching, learning and the holistic development of children.

“Acts of violence, intimidation and the use of firearms on school premises are unacceptable and constitute a grave threat to the safety and well-being of learners, teachers and the entire educational community,” the Ministry stated.

The Ministry also cautioned the public against encroaching on school premises, stressing the importance of protecting educational institutions from acts that disrupt teaching and learning.

It expressed solidarity with the injured headmaster, pupils and staff of Zohe EP Primary School, while wishing the headmaster a speedy recovery.

The Ministry further assured parents and guardians that it would continue to work closely with the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to strengthen security in schools and ensure a safe learning environment nationwide.

It also appealed to members of the public with information that could assist the investigation to cooperate with the Police to help bring the perpetrators to justice.
