A delegation from the ECOWAS Commission has commenced a three-day study tour in Ghana to understudy the National Petroleum Authority’s (NPA) regulatory framework on fuel quality standards.

The visit forms part of efforts to strengthen downstream petroleum regulation and promote the implementation of harmonised fuel quality standards across the West African sub-region.

The delegation, made up of regulators and officials from institutions responsible for managing the downstream petroleum sector in ECOWAS member states, is expected to exchange experiences, share best practices and deepen cooperation among member countries.

Welcoming the team on Monday, the Chief Executive of the NPA, Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, said Ghana’s fuel quality assurance framework provides valuable lessons for the region.

He, however, stressed that while member states can adopt best practices from one another, each country must tailor regulatory approaches to suit its unique national circumstances.

Mr. Tameklo emphasised the importance of sustained collaboration, peer learning and stronger partnerships to develop a more integrated, resilient and efficient regional petroleum market.

Responding on behalf of the delegation, the Acting Director of Energy and Mines at the ECOWAS Commission, Arkadius Koumoine, said harmonised fuel quality standards are critical to protecting public health, safeguarding the environment, improving energy security and addressing illicit fuel trade within the region.

He noted that closer cooperation among member states would help improve regulatory systems and support a more sustainable downstream petroleum sector across West Africa.
