About 30 people have died in mining-related incidents across mining districts in the Eastern Region since January 2026, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has said.
Deputy Eastern Regional NADMO Director in charge of Technical and Disaster Risk Reduction, Emmanuel Konja Tullah, revealed this while briefing the media at Asaman Tamfoe, where a mining pit collapse killed seven people.
He said the recurring incidents are proof of weak enforcement of safety rules at mining sites, particularly the requirement for concession owners to properly secure or cover abandoned pits.
“We have had a series of galamsey-related deaths numbering not less than 30 within the region in 2026. The concession owners must strengthen their oversight activities, ensuring the necessary coordination and security measures so these incidents do not recur. NADMO is going to partner with them and other agencies as we intensify this education,” he said.
Mr Tullah called on concession owners to take responsibility for activities on their mining sites and ensure that safety measures are followed strictly.
He added that NADMO will work with relevant agencies and stakeholders to promote compliance and public education across mining communities in the region.
