A Security Analyst, Emmanuel Sowatey has stated the establishment of Commission of Inquiry to investigate the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence is a waste of taxpayers’ money.

The Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia with the consent of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, set up a four-member Commission of Inquiry on Wednesday to investigate the violence which occurred during the by-election in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency.

The commission has Mr Justice Emile Short as Chairman, with Professor Henrietta Mensah-Bonsu and Mr Patrick K. Acheampong and Mr Ernest Kofi Abotsias members.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen Show on Friday, Mr Sowatey said the violence that rocked the by-election should have been something minimal for the police to investigate and not a commission.

“It is a waste of taxpayers’ money because we have trained personnel which is the police, so why do we have to waste another money to establish to look into this issue” he stated.

Mr Sowatey, however, stated that, it is about time the police become independent and free from external influences.

“The commission won’t be necessary if we trusted the police because this is purely the work of the police. The two major political parties we have don’t trust the police when in opposition but when they come in power, they make the police look like an independent and an effective body.”

The Commission of Inquiry is expected to make a full, faithful and impartial inquiry into the circumstances of, and establish the facts leading to, the events and associated violence during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.
