Abetifi Member of Parliament (MP), Bryan Acheampong, has disclosed that the suspension of the Nkawkaw Stadium project followed a directive from the National Sports Authority (NSA) to pause construction pending documentation and legal clarity.
According to Mr Acheampong, NSA Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah personally communicated the directive to him in a private message on June 16, 2025, assuring him that the matter would be reported to the appropriate authorities.
Speaking on Adom FM Dwaso Nsem, Mr Acheampong made the message public, saying the prolonged silence over the project has made it necessary to explain why work was halted.
The message from Mr Ankrah, according to the MP, read: “Once we all stakeholders are aligned, especially with the documentation and legal clarity, we can proceed. For now, pause so that I can report accurately back to the top.”
Mr Acheampong said although the conversation was private, he had decided to disclose it because of the continuing uncertainty surrounding the stadium project.
“I apologise to him and ask him to forgive me because this was our private conversation, but it was not a breach of his trust. Making the message public has become necessary because of the issue with the stadium,” he said.
He noted that the directive was issued at about 4:38 a.m. on June 16, 2025, and said more than a year later, he had still not received any further communication from the NSA boss on the project.
“Over a year and two months now, since then, I haven’t heard anything from him,” he said.
Mr Acheampong rejected any suggestion that the stadium project had been abandoned without substantial work being undertaken.
He said he had already committed significant resources to the project, including the use of tipper trucks, bulldozers, excavators, and other heavy machinery.
“The wall has been constructed. We brought the sand. Furniture we imported from China is all in. 2,800 seats are all there till now. So work was actually going on. It’s not that nothing had been done,” he explained.
The MP further alleged that some materials he purchased specifically for the stadium had subsequently been used by the assembly for paragliding activities and were destroyed.
“Materials I bought to use for the stadium; the assembly has used them for paragliding and has destroyed all of them,” he alleged.
Mr Acheampong said his intention was to provide the facility for residents in the area, but he was unable to proceed after the supervising agency instructed him to suspend the work.
“I wanted to do this for my people, but if the supervising agency asked me to stop and has since not said anything, I don’t have anything to say or do,” he said.
