Cadet Corps members from Hwidiem Senior High School and Acherensua Senior High School, in collaboration with the Asutifi South District Assembly, have undertaken a cleanup exercise in Hwidiem to promote environmental cleanliness and improve sanitation in the district capital.
The exercise involved sweeping streets, desilting gutters and cleaning various sections of the Saint Elizabeth Hospital.
Speaking to Adom News after the exercise, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Asutifi South, Benjamin Assabil Donkor, said the monthly cleanup programme introduced by the government has significantly improved sanitation standards across the district, particularly in Hwidiem.

According to him, beyond public education on sanitation, the district’s Environmental Health Unit regularly monitors communities to ensure residents adhere to proper sanitation practices to prevent disease outbreaks.
Mr. Donkor stressed that maintaining a clean environment remains a shared responsibility and urged residents to support efforts aimed at keeping the district clean.
Addressing concerns about the absence of public waste bins on the streets of Hwidiem, the District Environmental Health Analyst, Yaw Adusei, explained that the assembly had previously installed waste bins in public spaces, but the initiative was abused by some residents.
He noted that some people dumped household waste and even human excreta into the bins, defeating the purpose for which they were provided.
Mr. Adusei said the assembly is currently developing strategies to ensure the proper use of public waste bins before reintroducing them.
Meanwhile, the Head of Cadets at Hwidiem Senior High School, Frank Boakye Mensah, called on Ghanaians to take sanitation issues seriously.
He said poor sanitation continues to have negative consequences for the country and urged the public to desist from indiscriminate littering and adopt responsible waste disposal practices.
