A major rescue operation was underway at the North Industrial Area in Accra after a building collapsed in the early hours of Sunday, June 7, trapping at least two people beneath the rubble.

The incident occurred at about 4:25 a.m., prompting an emergency response from personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the Ghana Police Service, NADMO and the Ghana Armed Forces.

Witnesses said they heard a loud crashing sound shortly before dawn, causing residents and workers in nearby buildings to rush to the scene.

“I heard a huge bang and when we came out, the whole structure had come down,” an eyewitness recounted.

Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang later visited the scene, where emergency teams continued rescue and recovery operations.

Upon her arrival, she was briefed by officials from the Ghana National Fire Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Police Service, and the Ghana Armed Forces on ongoing efforts to rescue those trapped and secure the site.

The Vice President toured the debris field and observed rescue personnel using excavators and other heavy-duty equipment to clear the rubble.

Addressing the media, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the incident underscored the consequences of non-compliance with established regulations and stressed the need for accountability at all levels.

Also present at the scene were the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo; the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey; the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak; and other government officials.

Adomonline’s photojournalist Joseph Odotei was present to capture key moments from the scene.
