Real Madrid and Croatia’s Luka Modric has been named FIFA men’s player of the year at the Best Fifa Awards 2018 which took place at the Royal Festival Hall, in London’s Southbank.

Receiving the award, Modric commented: “It’s a great honour and beautiful feeling to stand here with this trophy.

“I would like to give congratulations to Mohamed and Cristiano for the great season that they had. I am sure in the future you will have another opportunity to fight for this.

“This trophy is not just mine. It is for my Real Madrid team-mates, the Croatia national team and all my coaches. This is also for my family, without who I would not be the player I am“.

Mohammed Salah of Egypt and Liverpool won goal of the year while Chelsea and Belgium’s Thibaut Courtois was voted goalkeeper of the year.

Didier Deschamps was named men’s coach of the year with fellow Frenchman Reynald Pedros as women’s coach of the year.

Brazilian Marta won women’s player of the year award.
