Ghana international André Ayew has endured a difficult spell in the Netherlands after NAC Breda’s relegation from the Eredivisie was confirmed, sending the club down to the second tier for next season.
Breda will now compete in the Eerste Divisie after results elsewhere sealed their fate. Sixteenth-placed Volendam’s 1-1 draw with Excelsior pushed them to 32 points—seven clear of NAC Breda—with only two matches remaining.
That gap proved decisive, leaving Breda stuck in 17th place in the 18-team standings and unable to escape the relegation zone regardless of their remaining fixtures.
The club’s scheduled match against Heerenveen was abandoned following fireworks being set off at the stadium, but even without that disruption, the mathematical reality of their situation remained unchanged.
Ayew, the former Ghana captain, joined NAC Breda in January as a free agent. He has since managed one goal in 16 league appearances during a challenging half-season in Dutch football.
He is not alone in the squad, with fellow Black Stars internationals Kamal Sowah and Denis Odoi also part of the team that has struggled to compete consistently at the top level this campaign.
Ayew’s future now looks uncertain, with the experienced forward expected to depart the club after signing a short-term deal running only until the end of the season.
