The Greater Accra Regional Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Anthony Nukpenu, has described the recent flooding in Accra as “not a catastrophe or a disaster,” but rather God exposing the irresponsibility and indiscipline of Ghanaians.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Nupkenu said the heavy downpour has revealed long-standing problems of poor planning, encroachment on waterways and disregard for environmental regulations.

“Accra is not flooded; it is messy. God has just exposed us for our irresponsibility. This is not a catastrophe or a disaster, as people are saying. God is just telling us that we are not disciplined, forthright and trustworthy,” he stated.

He added that the current situation is only a warning of worse conditions to come if citizens fail to change their behaviour.

“This is just the tip of the iceberg God has shown us,” he said.

The NDC organiser criticised the indiscriminate construction on waterways and wetlands, as well as the allocation of such lands to foreign entities.

“God created waterways when he created the world. Why are we encroaching on them? The Accra plan is there, the streams, lakes and wetlands are all mapped out.

“But now we have taken over these places, we have blocked the waterways and are building on them. We are even giving wetlands to Chinese and Lebanese to build warehouses,” he lamented.

He also pointed to the proliferation of kiosks in unauthorised places as part of the problem.

“People mount kiosks in certain places, and we watch on. Look at the number of kiosks that were washed away. People could be in and lose their lives,” he noted.

Mr. Nukpenu’s comments come as Accra continues to deal with the aftermath of Monday’s heavy rains, which caused significant flooding in many parts of the capital, submerging homes, shops, and major roads.
