Musician and political activist Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has raised fresh concerns over the reported rise in crime in Teshie, describing the community as increasingly unsafe.
His comments come amid growing concerns about security in the area following the reported luring and killing of a phone dealer, as well as accounts from residents and other members of the public about alleged car snatching and armed robbery incidents.
In a strongly worded social media post, A Plus said Teshie, once regarded as a quiet and enviable community, was developing a reputation for criminal activity that could no longer be ignored.
He said the situation had become so concerning that information reaching him from the ride-hailing industry suggested that security meetings had been held with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service over how to address crime in the area.
According to him, some ride-hailing drivers are now reluctant to accept trips to Teshie at night, with drivers reportedly becoming difficult to find for journeys to the community after 8 p.m.
A Plus questioned how a community hosting several major security institutions could be struggling with such concerns.
Teshie is home to institutions including the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College and the Headquarters of the Southern Command, alongside other military facilities.
For A Plus, the presence of these institutions makes the reported security situation even more troubling and raises questions about how criminals are able to operate despite the concentration of security personnel and facilities in the area.
He contrasted the situation with a recent security incident in Gomoa, arguing that authorities were able to respond quickly, arrest suspects and restore order.
He said Teshie residents deserved the same level of decisive action and urged them to demand stronger leadership and improved security rather than allowing fear to become normal.
