The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has asked authorities of the Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the Student’s Representative Council to return to the discussion table immediately.

Addressing the root cause of the matter is what Kennedy Agyapong is professing as a solution to solve the current impasse.

To the MP, though the students may have a point, vandalising the school’s properties was not the way to go.

“This issue is very sensitive and so if you comment on it and don’t take care, you may end up stepping on people’s toes and so inasmuch as I condemn the acts of the students, I think they may have a point and so it’s important that the student’s union sits with leadership to see the way forward” he stated on Adom TV’s morning show, Badwam Tuesday.

Kennedy Agyapong advised the students to have confidence in the leadership and channel their grievances to the rightful authorities instead of taking the laws into their own hands.

On his part, former Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Sampson Ahi has challenged authorities of KNUST to sit up and address the challenges confronting the school.

According to the Bodi lawmaker, there is a fundamental problem which needs to be addressed, therefore, it is important that authorities pay heed to the students’ concerns.

“I think there is a fundamental problem there which needs to be resolved. The authorities cannot be dictators because we are now in a democratic world and so it’s important that they listen to the students and solve the root cause amicably. Authorities must sit up and resolve the issue,” he said.

Background

The demonstration organised by the Student Representative Council was a culmination of what they described as ‘oppression’ by the university administration headed by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso.

Students clad in red attire mounted roadblocks on campus. At least 30 vehicles have been damaged and glasses smashed.

Police were called to step in and the Ashanti Regional Security Council later imposed a curfew and closed down the school.
