Ghana and India are set to deepen cooperation in railway infrastructure, with the two countries committing to undertake more railway projects following the successful completion of the Indian-financed Tema-Mpakadan railway line.

The commitment forms part of a broader expansion of Ghana-India relations following the working visit of India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr S. Jaishankar.

The government said the successful Tema-Mpakadan railway project has created a foundation for further collaboration as Ghana seeks to expand and modernise its railway network.

The Indian-financed project, which connects Tema to Mpakadan in the Oti Region, is expected to strengthen freight and passenger transportation while improving connectivity between communities and economic centres along the corridor.

Beyond railway infrastructure, Ghana and India are also deepening cooperation in several strategic areas, including pharmaceuticals, digital technology, artificial intelligence, defence, agriculture and scientific research.

India is expected to increase investments in Ghana’s pharmaceutical sector as the Mahama administration pushes to expand local pharmaceutical production under its Accra Reset health sovereignty initiative.

The two countries are also strengthening collaboration in digital technology and artificial intelligence, while negotiations have begun on a Defence Cooperation Agreement expected to be completed early next year.

During Dr Jaishankar’s visit, Ghana and India signed agreements on scientific research collaboration and agricultural cooperation.

Ghana is also expected to play a role in shaping Africa-India relations next year when it assumes the chairmanship of the African Union. The government says it will coordinate efforts to develop an Africa-India strategy ahead of the next Africa-India summit.

The government further announced Ghana’s decision to apply for membership of BRICS, describing the move as part of efforts to expand the country’s geopolitical and economic frontiers while maintaining its national interest and freedom of choice.

The latest developments point to an increasingly broad Ghana-India partnership, with railway infrastructure emerging as one of the key areas where the two countries intend to translate their diplomatic ties into major development projects.
