The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) says it sought the intervention of the National Security Council Secretariat to remove unauthorised occupants and activities from the beachfronts adjoining the Labadi Beach Hotel and La Palm Royal Beach Hotel.
According to SSNIT, the beachfront areas have been affected by persistent unlawful occupation, encroachment and unauthorised activities, posing risks to the hotels and their operations.
In a statement issued on October 2, 2026, the Board of Trustees said the two hotels form part of SSNIT’s investment portfolio and represent significant national hospitality and tourism assets.
It said the Trust has a fiduciary responsibility to safeguard the investments, preserve their value and ensure that they continue to generate sustainable returns for contributors and pensioners under the Basic National Social Security Scheme.
“These assets belong to the workers and pensioners of Ghana,” SSNIT stressed.
The Trust identified several risks associated with the continued encroachment, including threats to the safety and security of hotel guests, employees, service providers and visitors.
It also cited unauthorised access to restricted guest and operational areas, increased exposure to fire, sanitation, environmental and public health hazards, as well as the deterioration of the beachfront, privacy and service standards of the hotels.
SSNIT further expressed concern that construction activities along the beachfront and beach sand were contributing to the degradation of the coastal ecosystem.
The Trust said the encroachment could also damage the reputation of the hotels, SSNIT and Ghana’s tourism industry, while disrupting hotel operations and the guest experience, with possible consequences for patronage, revenue and overall financial performance.
It added that continued expansion of the encroachments could make the recovery of affected lands increasingly difficult and costly.
In view of these concerns, SSNIT said it requested support from the National Security Secretariat to protect the assets, which it described as belonging to Ghanaian workers.
The Trust further announced that the affected beaches would be cleaned and restored to a safe and desirable state and would remain open to the public.
