New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has condemned the demolition of La Pleasure Beach in Accra, saying it is painful and surprising that even movable assets the owners could easily have removed were destroyed.
In a press release issued on Saturday, October 3, 2026, he said La Beach is socially, economically, culturally and internationally significant, and that it has grown on its own into the most vibrant beach resort in Ghana.
“It’s sad that this very significant enclave has been demolished so wantonly. It is particularly painful and surprising that even movable assets which the owners could have removed easily were destroyed in a most bizarre fashion,” he said.
The demolition took place on Friday, October 2, and affected several structures and businesses along the La Beach area, including La Pleasure Beach and Polo Beach Club.
Dr Bawumia said the beach is a source of livelihood for thousands of people, especially the youth, and is extremely important to the nation and to the people of La in particular.
He added that it has been the hub of many international functions and shows.
He recalled that during the NPP government’s tenure, the beach was one of the key places that supported the Year of Return and related activities, which he said put Ghana on the map.
The former Vice President pledged his commitment to the people of La, especially the businesses at La Beach, to turn the area into a major tourist and economic enclave if he wins the next election.
“I am convinced that we must make La beach a major tourist and economic enclave and I pledge my commitment to the people of La especially the businesses at la beach to make that happen,” he said.
“I am committed to save the thousands of jobs that beach economy supports and to improve them,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) says it asked National Security to help remove unauthorised occupants from the beachfront adjoining the Labadi Beach Hotel and La Palm Royal Beach Hotel.
