The New Patriotic Party (NPP) should use its upcoming national executive elections to elect officials capable of rebuilding and organising the party ahead of the 2028 general elections, rather than turning the contest into a referendum on loyalty to its flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
NPP Organisation Committee Chairperson, Anthony Karbo, has dismissed suggestions that the October 3 polls could result in the emergence of a slate of candidates identified as pro-Bawumia.
According to him, the presidential candidate has already been selected, and that process should not be allowed to influence the election of the party’s national officers.
Mr Karbo explained that the delegates’ focus should be on candidates seeking positions such as National Chairman, General Secretary, National Organiser, National Women’s Organiser and National Youth Organiser, whose primary responsibility will be to strengthen the party’s organisational structures and prepare it for the 2028 elections.
Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM ahead of the polls, he rejected the idea of categorising aspirants based on their perceived relationship with Dr Bawumia.
“There can’t be. There can’t be,” he said, stressing that delegates should assess aspirants on their competence and capacity rather than their proximity to the flagbearer.
“We are not voting for people who are close to somebody. We are voting for efficient party officers who can help deliver the project,” he added.
Mr Karbo maintained that with the presidential candidacy already settled, the immediate task was to put in place a national executive team capable of organising the NPP and advancing its preparations towards the 2028 elections.
The NPP is scheduled to elect its national officers on October 3 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
The party initially cleared 47 aspirants to contest nine national positions, although the number of candidates has since changed following withdrawals.
