President John Dramani Mahama has used his engagements at the United Nations General Assembly in New York to hold talks with China’s Vice President, Han Zheng, as Ghana seeks to further strengthen cooperation with the Asian economic powerhouse.
The meeting, held on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly, focused on areas of mutual interest and opportunities to deepen the longstanding bilateral relationship between Ghana and China.
According to the Presidency, the engagement formed part of President Mahama’s series of bilateral meetings with global leaders during the UN gathering.
The discussions come as Ghana continues to pursue international partnerships aimed at supporting economic development, investment and other areas of shared interest.
China’s Vice President Han Zheng was in New York for the UN General Assembly’s general debate from September 24 to 26, where he represented China and outlined Beijing’s positions on global development, multilateralism and international cooperation.
President Mahama’s broader UNGA programme has included engagements with world leaders and international institutions, with a focus on strengthening partnerships, attracting investment and advancing Ghana’s interests on global platforms.
The 81st UN General Assembly was held under the theme, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All.”
The session placed emphasis on rebuilding confidence in multilateral cooperation, advancing the Sustainable Development Goals and responding to major global challenges.
The meeting with Vice President Han therefore adds another high-level diplomatic engagement to President Mahama’s activities in New York as Ghana works to deepen its relations with China and other international partners.
