The Pre-Tertiary Education Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) says it will attend a meeting scheduled by government today if its members have the time to do so.
PRETAG Vice President Adokwei Ayikwei Awulley says the unions have no problem with the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department and are instead focused on the implementation of agreements reached with government.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem amid the ongoing strike by teacher unions, Mr Awulley said the unions are expecting the document agreed on August 31, 2026, to be fully implemented.
“The government has scheduled a meeting for today, and if we have time, we will go,” he said.
The teachers are on strike over stalled negotiations for a new Collective Agreement despite the expiration of the existing agreement and an earlier expectation that the process would have been completed by June 2026.
They are also demanding the automatic placement of newly promoted teachers who successfully completed aptitude tests in December 2025 and February 2026.
The unions said the failure to implement the agreement between the Ministry of Education/Ghana Education Service and CAGD has left the affected teachers without placement on their respective salary scales with arrears dating from January 2026.
Mr Awulley said the unions remain ready to engage government if there is a genuine commitment to resolving the issues.
He said one of their key expectations is for government to put measures in place to ensure that teachers working in deprived areas receive the appropriate allowance by the end of September.
“We have no problem with the Controller,” he said, stressing that the focus is on ensuring that the commitments reached with government are implemented.
Mr Awulley also expressed concern that promises made by President John Mahama to the teacher unions ahead of the elections have yet to be fulfilled.
“President Mahama ahead of the election met us but none of the promises he made to us have been implemented. We’re still where we used to be,” he said.
He added that teachers who have been promoted must also be placed on the appropriate salary scale.
He added that if government is ready to reach an agreement and implement the outstanding commitments, the unions are prepared to engage.
