The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called on government to take the necessary steps to resolve the issues behind the ongoing teacher strike, saying the country’s education system cannot afford prolonged disruption.
GNAT Head of Salaries, Isaac Nii Baah, said teachers are ready to return to the classroom, but the concerns that triggered the industrial action must first be addressed.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Baah stressed the importance of education to Ghana’s development and the central role teachers play in the process.
“Ghana is for all of us, and any nation that wants to develop doesn’t downplay education; you prioritise it and it is teachers who will make it work,” he said.
He said the strike is also affecting teachers and pupils, with children being kept away from school while the dispute remains unresolved.
“Our children are also at home, and we’re worried,” Mr Baah stated.
He therefore urged anyone seeking to offer advice on the impasse to direct that advice towards finding a solution that will enable teachers to resume work.
“So if anyone has any advice, they should give it to government to do the needful,” he said.
The three teacher unions in Ghana declared a nationwide industrial action, effective Friday, September 25, 2026, over what they describe as prolonged delays in addressing critical concerns affecting teachers.
GNAT, National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana (PRETAG) explained that the decision follows growing frustration among teachers over the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department’s (CAGD) handling of issues relating to their conditions of service.
