Aspiring New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary Sylvester Tetteh says he will resign from the position on election day if the party records a significant decline in votes and parliamentary seats in the next general election.
Speaking on Adom TV’s Badwam, Mr Tetteh stressed the importance of measuring the party’s electoral performance by both votes and parliamentary seats.
“If the NPP goes into an election and again we lose 1.7 million votes and lose 50 seats in the next election, I will resign on the day of the election.”
Mr Tetteh said he would be prepared to resign immediately if the party suffers a significant decline in both its presidential votes and parliamentary representation.
“The margin matters.”
He emphasised that the extent of any gains or losses should be a key consideration when assessing the performance of the party’s leadership.
“We currently have 87 seats.”
Mr Tetteh pointed to the NPP’s current parliamentary strength as the baseline against which its performance in the next election should be measured.
“If I become General Secretary, the next election, we get 137 seats, there is going to be applause for everyone, even though, look at the jump.”
He argued that increasing the party’s parliamentary seats from 87 to 137 would represent a substantial improvement and would reflect positively on the collective efforts of the party.
He suggested that clear principles and measurable results should guide how the performance of the party’s leadership is assessed.
