The government has eased restrictions on motorbike riding in the Bawku Municipality and its surrounding areas in the Upper East Region.
Under the revised arrangement, both men and women will be permitted to ride motorbikes between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. each day.
The Interior Ministry announced the change on Monday, August 24, 2026, saying the decision followed a review by the Minister for the Interior on the advice of the National Security Council and was effected through an Executive Instrument.
The new arrangement takes effect on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.
Despite the easing of the motorbike restrictions, the existing curfew in Bawku and its environs remains in force from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The ministry also reiterated a total ban on the possession and carrying of arms, ammunition and other offensive weapons within the affected areas.
It warned that anyone found carrying arms or ammunition would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The latest decision forms part of the government’s measures to balance security concerns in Bawku with the need to allow residents greater freedom of movement and access to transportation during the day.
